East Sacramento history
The homes in the East Sacramento community are some of the most sought-after in Sacramento. Vintage houses are framed by tree-lined streets that make for a picturesque view.
The East Sacramento residential development began in the late 19th century. It was annexed into Sacramento in 1911.
East Sacramento and McKinley Park
McKinley Park is one of many highlights of East Sacramento. East Sacramento and McKinley Park are highly desirable neighborhoods due partly to their central freeway location, closeness to the Midtown area and the State Capital. McKinley Park is know for its the rose garden with amazing variety of roses. The McKinley Library and Pool complex surround the community built children’s play ground which overlooks the duck pond.
Some East Sacramento resident insights
I love Bertha Henschel Park near our house. It has a playground for children and a water feature. In the evenings, people bring their dogs there to play.
I also like McKinley Park. It’s great for jogging, playing sports, wandering around the rose garden, watching the ducks and turtles in the pond, or having a picnic. You see a diverse group of people enjoying the park on any day. The library there is a good asset, too.
The neighborhoods have a lot of character, with older houses and big trees. The neighborhood is compact and therefore very walk-able. There is a lot of “life” on the streets when you go out: older couples walking, families, people with pets, joggers.
There are a lot of great local businesses nearby, like Compton’s, Selland’s, Evan’s Kitchen, and East Sac. Auto to name just a few. I can do most of my errands without leaving East Sac. You can walk or bike easily to most places. It’s also a very safe community.
It has a lot of the amenities of a big city while retaining a small town feel. I love the new farm-to-table foodie culture going on around the city. There are so many restaurants to try. (A K)
